Roundup: 2020 SAFTAs

We might be living in a time where unfortunately we cannot gather in public spaces but as they say in show business the show must go on. This is what happened last night as the National Film and Video foundation with the guidance of the Department of Arts & Culture, held a virtual award ceremony which was hosted by the talented Dineo Ranaka.
I must say I was rather not pleased with the delayed start, but this can be excused as we have never had to host an awards show in such a manner. The biggest winner of the night was Knuckle City in terms of the awards related to the motion picture category. The feature film is centered around the relationship between a boxer and his deviant brother as they take one more shot at the big time.
The night's other big winner was The River which is produced by Tshedza Pictures. The popular telenovela took home 10 awards ,whilst its sister show The Republic took a whopping seven awards which include the coveted Best TV Drama gong. The River besides being a great show, has gotten South African Audiences captivated with its ever thrilling plot twists. The drama has revived the telenovela genre which still has popular shows such as The Queen, Gomora etc. which are good but lack the edge when it comes to their story lines.
The one thing I would say I took from watching the virtual awards is that we must open a room of consideration for the fact that this might be how we witness awards shows in the near future. This might not be ideal but it is how we will keep the engine running in the entertainment industry. As viewers, we must also pledge to support local entertainment content and familiarize ourselves with South African feature films that are being produced. This would be the only way to save our entertainment industry.

The 'revolt' against Beyonce

It is no secret that the release of a Beyonce album whether it is pre-announced or a surprise drop is bound to get the masses talking. The water-cooler talk can be both positive or negative.  This is seemingly the case with the upcoming release of the second act, Cowboy Carter  in the three act Renaissance series that Beyonce has gifted us with. The alternative album cover. Image via X @ColumbiaRecords The Cowboy Carter album sees the reigning queen of music exploring a genre which is not new within her discography and that is country music. This innovative move has sparked praise and criticism alike. The argument brought forward by the critics, most recently Azealia Banks, who is known for her very outspoken opinion, is that Beyonce is using 'victim mentality' to promote the album and to enter a market that will never embrace her. It can be said that her foray into country music has not been greatly welcomed by the listeners of the genre.  This resulted

REAL HOUSEWIVES OF DURBAN STATE OF AFFAIRS

The fourth season of The Real Housewives of Durban has not failed to deliver drama-filled episodes. The Durban based segment of the Real Housewives franchise is definitely in the frontrunner to be considered the leading African installment. The show has been getting viewers talking since it made its debut in 2021 and every season has delivered when it came to shade, drama and of course fabulous fashion. We are currently on episode 11 of the fourth season and there is much to dissect regarding the happenings of this season. 1. The ladies divided We left the group at the end of season 3 divided between Team Sorisha (Sorisha, Maria, Slee and Annie) and Team Nonku (Nonku & Jojo). The new season introduced three more ladies to the mix of the already divided circle. The new additions easily fitted into the group where most of them naturally gravitated towards the resident Queen B, I mean Sorisha. This was without the exception of Zama who ironically had been introduced to the group by S
