Roundup: ‘Blood Legacy’

The latest release from Gambit Productions ‘Blood Legacy’ has just rightfully earned its spot on the list of the productions that have set the bar amongst this year’s releases with its stellar cast and quality production aesthetic that has had South Africa buzzing with excitement.

You know those goosebumps you feel after watching a trailer for an upcoming Netflix or Showmax release, that is what I felt after I watched the trailer for Blood Legacy for the first time. The show which is set in Durban lived up to the standards that were set by the trailer.

A great cast is the key ingredient

The first aspect of the show that grabs your attention when you watch the first episode is the amazing casting. The combination of the legendary, veteran and the up-and-coming actors that we are lucky to have here in South Africa can be found on the show.

The legendary would be the late Connie Chiume and Sello Maake Ka-Ncube, the veterans would be Xolile Tshabalala, Pallance Dladla, Enhle Mbali- Mlotshwa, Dawn Thandeka King and Buyile Mdladla. The up and coming would include The River actors Unathi Mkhize, Thabiso Ramotshela and fresh from her lead role in Law.love and Betrayal Dineo Rasedile.

The performance as the matriarch of the Ndlovu family was Connie Chiume’s last role. This performance according to news website Briefly was one that was applauded by many.

The impact of the narrative of the show

The narrative of the show might not be quite new as it is a remake of another Netflix series Monarca but the South African delivery and touch was  quite splendid where each thirty minute episode left you either speechless or dying to move on to the final episode just to see how it ended.

The other noteworthy point of the show is that even though it explores the popular theme of sibling rivalry with a combination of an epic power struggle, the series also places the spotlight on sensitive social issues such as rape and victim shaming.

The portrayal of a polyamorous relationship where two of the parties are male is something that might be new to South African viewers but the portrayal of this relationship between the three parties is impressive because of the performances from the actors which express the emotions that exist in such relationships.

The series is a must watch and I will be keeping my fingers crossed for a second season as the finale of the show  left us wanting more of the Ndlovu and Adesina family.

In a perfect world when asked ‘Why do you watch reality television shows’ we might be quick to say we watch those shows because of the insights into the different lives and cultures of the cast members and so forth but if we are honest, it is the ongoing drama and conflict that has us tuning in to every episode of that specific shows. The 'revolt' against Beyonce

It is no secret that the release of a Beyonce album whether it is pre-announced or a surprise drop is bound to get the masses talking. The water-cooler talk can be both positive or negative.  This is seemingly the case with the upcoming release of the second act, Cowboy Carter  in the three act Renaissance series that Beyonce has gifted us with. The alternative album cover. Image via X @ColumbiaRecords The Cowboy Carter album sees the reigning queen of music exploring a genre which is not new within her discography and that is country music. This innovative move has sparked praise and criticism alike. The argument brought forward by the critics, most recently Azealia Banks, who is known for her very outspoken opinion, is that Beyonce is using 'victim mentality' to promote the album and to enter a market that will never embrace her. It can be said that her foray into country music has not been greatly welcomed by the listeners of the genre.  This resulted

REAL HOUSEWIVES OF DURBAN STATE OF AFFAIRS

The fourth season of The Real Housewives of Durban has not failed to deliver drama-filled episodes. The Durban based segment of the Real Housewives franchise is definitely in the frontrunner to be considered the leading African installment. The show has been getting viewers talking since it made its debut in 2021 and every season has delivered when it came to shade, drama and of course fabulous fashion. We are currently on episode 11 of the fourth season and there is much to dissect regarding the happenings of this season. 1. The ladies divided We left the group at the end of season 3 divided between Team Sorisha (Sorisha, Maria, Slee and Annie) and Team Nonku (Nonku & Jojo). The new season introduced three more ladies to the mix of the already divided circle. The new additions easily fitted into the group where most of them naturally gravitated towards the resident Queen B, I mean Sorisha. This was without the exception of Zama who ironically had been introduced to the group by S
