2017 Mandela Bay Fashion Week

In the next two months, starting from 12 October 2017 the Nelson Mandela Bay will be filled with a fashionable buzz because it will officially be fashion week. Words cannot describe how I am personally looking forward to the shows and the events that will be held during the four day extravaganza. Last week Thursday, a media briefing was held by the organizers of the fashion week at Chapel Street Studios. It was a great to actually hear personally from the organizers of the fashion week and questions regarding the event were answered. The information about the fashion week is as follows as derived from the distributed statement from the organizers: The Mandela Bay Fashion Week™ team is very pleased to announce that this year’s second edition of MANDELA BAY FASHION WEEK (NMBFW) is to take place from 12 - 15 October 2017 at The Tramways in Nelson Mandela Bay. MANDELA BAY FASHION WEEK™ (NMBFW) came into being as an innovative, solution-focused concept to enliven and evolve the Fashi...

Imibala Unplugged Festival

The second installment of The Imibala Unplugged Festival will be held tommorow at the venue of choice for all events in PE, The Tramways. I am a big fan of live music and I truly believe in the potential of the artists that we have in the Bay. The best thing about the line-up is that it is dominated by females. In music it can be truly said that women run things. The line-up includes the following artists: The Scheubles are a family group that grew up in Schauderville. Their sounds are entrenched in gospel and contemporary music. The lead singers of the band are Megan and Ethan (seen above). The band has been performing their music at the Boardwalk every Sunday for the past two years. Samantha Amanda Jennings most popularly knows as 'Miss Jay' is a local music powerhouse. She is a DJ whose sound has strong hip-hop influences but she does dabble with other genres such soul, jazz, r&b and other genres. Miss Jay has garnered a large fanbase in Port Elizabeth ...

Fluid Exhibition: Review

The Arts & Culture department at Nelson Mandela University held the Fluid exhibition last week Thursday at the Bird Street Campus of the university. I have to say it was one of the best events that I have ever attended in my life thus far. As I walked into the art gallery, I was greeted by models showcasing the work of the talented Nehemiah Latolla who also doubles as a science Phd student. The items from the Nehemiah Designs range was the epitome of fashion that defines gender fluidity because the clothing items would not be normally considered appropriate for the traditional male. The same can be said for the items presented by renowned fashion design graduate Dalton Smit, whose crochet shorts literally made me feel happy inside. The event then proceeded on to the panel discussion where individuals who had in-depth knowledge on the topic were part of the panel. I particularly enjoyed the question and answer session because it personally answered the questions t...

UPCOMING EVENTS

As August is officially Women's Month it is naturally my favourite month. Most of my role models are powerful women, so I am always on board when it comes to celebrating women. The best aspect about all of these events is that they celebrate the individual. The Black Filmaker's Film Screening is focused on showing films that portray the struggles of women as well as some other exciting features that are part of the programme. The Imibala event is a musical showcase which I am most excited about as an avid music fan. The lineup looks really good especially since it includes Miss DJ Jay, Tamrryn Swarts and other talented artists. The Fluid exhibition is defiantly going to be the highlight of my week. I am always keen on events that question society's traditional views on gender stereotypes and conformity. So I look forward to seeing you at one of these fabulous events.
